Saltwater Parisites

This is the time of year when the temperature fluctuations  and we see a lot of  ICH infections in our tanks. In a fish only tank the solution is simple, lower the salinity to 1.013 and add copper sulfate, preferably Cupramine, to a dose of .5 ppm. This normally will cure the ICH in two weeks with minimal loss. It is IMPORTANT to catch the ICH at the very onset to control losses.

Now in a reef tank things are not so simple. First off your coral and inverts will not tolerate copper, or low salinity so we need to use some of the new products on the market such as Herbtana, buy Eco labs. We have had success with this as long as you use 12 hour dosing.  The best scenario is to remove most of the fish to a quarantine tank and treat them with copper,  keeping the main tank fish free for 20 days giving the parisite time to die off in the main tank.

In any event if you have questions feel free to call us for further advice.

Cichlids

Central American Cichlids, Saltwater Fish, South American Cichlids, African Cichlids

Cichlids, where do we start? Want fish that get big and eat you out of house and home? Then the cichlid group is for you. Most cichlids need a large aquarium with many rocks and caves for hiding places so they don’t pick on each other. Be prepared to feed a large variety of foods and frequent water changes to keep them in good condition. Our staples include the well known Oscar, the Jack Dempsy, Convict,  Managuense, Hornet, Green Terror, Texas, and the Red Devil. We try our best to bring in some of the less common Central American species, but it’s best to call us for availability.

Fire Fish

Firefish Goby (Nemateleotris magnifica) aka "Brownbarred Goby"
Purple Firefish Goby saltwater fish

Purple Fire Fish Goby

Another excellent reef fish is a fire goby, or fire fish and they come in three varieties, red, purple, and the rare deepwater Helfrichi.  All three types are hardy reef inhabitants and should be kept in groups of two or more, you can mix species if you add them to the tank at the same time. Maximum size is 3.5” so they work well in a nano tank. They are carnivorous and should be fed brine shrimp or other finely chopped seafood.  The red variety is commonly stocked at our store for ten dollars or less.
